A 93-Year-Old Filling Station Finds a New Home

Did you know EDA helped preserve a 93-year-old filling station, one of the oldest in the country, as it made its way to a new home?

A Journey Through Philadelphia

Originally located at the corner of 20th and Arch Streets, the filling station was relocated in 2023. It traveled down the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, past the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and arrived at its new home at Lemon Hill in Fairmount Park.

Preparing for the Move

EDA’s Historical Restoration team helped prepare the building for its journey. Before the structure was relocated, our crews carefully removed the existing roofing components.

Restoring the Roof

Once the filling station arrived at Lemon Hill, EDA returned to install a new terracotta roof, copper gutters, through-wall flashing, new downspouts, and a new flat roof at the rear of the building.

Preserving a Piece of History

Working on a structure nearly a century old required careful planning and close coordination. Our team worked to preserve the building’s historic character while preparing it for its next chapter.

A New Purpose

The building is now occupied by the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia, where it supports youth cycling education, community outreach, and bicycle programs throughout Fairmount Park.
