Celebrating the People Behind the Work This Labor Day

For many people, Labor Day marks the unofficial end of summer. More importantly, it is a day to recognize the workers whose efforts have helped build our communities and move our country forward.

At EDA Contractors, it is an opportunity to thank our field employees. Their hard work and craftsmanship make everything we do possible.

The Meaning Behind Labor Day

Labor Day grew out of the labor movement of the late 1800s, when workers began organizing for safer jobsites and fair treatment. The first Labor Day celebration was held in New York City in 1882, and it became a federal holiday in 1894.

The working conditions we have today were shaped by generations of people who stood together and pushed for change. Labor Day reminds us not to take that progress—or the people responsible for it—for granted.

Proud to Be a Union Contractor

EDA is proud to use union labor. Every member of our field team belongs to a trade union, and we partner with more than 20 unions throughout the areas where we work.

Those relationships are an important part of our company. Union training gives tradespeople the chance to learn from experienced professionals and continue developing throughout their careers. It also helps maintain the high standards our industry depends on.

We see the results of that training every day. Our field employees know their craft, take pride in their work, and understand what it takes to complete complicated projects the right way.

The People Who Make Our Work Possible

It is easy to look at a finished building and focus on the final result. What people do not always see are the years of experience behind it or the work that happens on-site each day.

Our carpenters, roofers, masons, and other field professionals work through changing conditions and solve problems as they arise. They pass knowledge along to newer employees and look out for the people working beside them. The quality of EDA’s work is a direct reflection of their effort.

Technology and building systems will continue to change, but skilled tradespeople will always be essential. Materials do not install themselves, and even the best plans rely on experienced people to bring them to life.

Appreciation That Lasts All Year

Although Labor Day gives us a reason to pause and say thank you, our appreciation cannot be limited to one holiday.

We want our employees to feel valued throughout the year. That means providing opportunities to grow and maintaining a workplace where people know they have support when they need it. Programs such as PACT—Personal Accountability Changes Today—are one way we continue working toward that goal.

We know there is always more work to do. Listening to our employees and continuing to improve are part of building the kind of company people are proud to represent.
