Today we speak with Carpenter Foreman, John Melle.

Is there a jobsite you’ve worked on that stands out to you? Why?
Live! Casino stands out. It was by far the longest project I’ve been on from start to finish. That job was a true example of Successful Together. EDA project managers and superintendents, our field crews, Gilbane Construction, and adjacent trades all worked together through some tough obstacles, including accelerated schedules, site access challenges, complex details, and, worst of all, COVID procedures.
What’s one thing that helps a jobsite run smoothly?
Communication. Without constant communication, subcontractors would not be able to coordinate effectively or work together efficiently.
What’s something people would be surprised to learn about your job?
I’m classified as a carpenter, but my role as a foreman at EDA is much more than that. I may not swing the hammer or hang the panels every day, but the planning and coordination that go into a normal day help my team achieve those goals.
What’s your go-to sandwich or lunch order?
I’m a huge lunch guy. I feel like getting my team a good lunch at least once a month is one important way to show that I appreciate their efforts. Cheesesteaks are the fan favorite. John’s Roast Pork is probably the most frequent choice, but with so many places popping up these days, we like trying new spots whenever we can.
What motivates you on the job?
Teamwork. Whether the task is simple or difficult, nothing gets us through the day better than everyone doing their part.
What’s one tool you couldn’t live without?
The brain. Without using our heads and planning our steps properly, there’s not a tool out there that’s going to make the work easy.
Who’s someone at EDA who makes your day better?
There isn’t just one person. As a field guy, we rely on the entire team to do their part. When all the parts are working in unison, that makes for a better day.
What’s one musical artist or podcast you couldn’t live without?
These days, I mostly listen to sports talk. The shows on 94.1 usually have my attention when I’m on the road. But if I had to pick one, I’d say I enjoy listening to the Kelce brothers’ podcast.
What does Successful Together look like on a jobsite?
Successful Together means everyone doing their part and working in sync. When communication is strong and every team is pulling in the same direction, that’s when a jobsite works at its best.
If you weren’t in construction, what would you be doing?
Growing up, I had a lot of older friends in law enforcement. Even though I don’t always see myself as a rule follower, I did consider pursuing an education in criminal justice.
