Celebrating Earth Day

Earth Day is a great time to appreciate the planet that gives us life and reflect on ways to be more environmentally conscious.

At EDA Contractors, sustainability is not a standalone initiative. It is built into the way we approach every project, every system, and every detail of the building envelope.

One way we bring this to life is through green roof systems. These systems transform underutilized roof space into functional, high-performing assets. They help reduce a building’s carbon footprint, improve insulation, and manage stormwater, all while contributing to a more efficient and resilient structure.

Our work also extends to projects designed around Passive House principles, where energy performance is a primary driver. These buildings are designed to maintain comfort with minimal energy use by leveraging insulation, airtight construction, and natural energy sources like sunlight. A strong example is Meadows Apartments at Princeton University, one of the largest Passive House projects in the country, where performance and sustainability are built into every layer of the design.

Adjacent to this project is the Tiger Cub Energy plant, another example of how integrated systems contribute to long-term sustainability. This facility supports a geo-exchange system, using heat pumps and electrical infrastructure to transfer energy between buildings and the ground. During warmer months, heat is pulled from buildings and stored underground, then reused during colder months. Systems like this help create more efficient, reliable, and forward-thinking energy solutions.

Sustainability is also embedded in our historical restoration work. Materials like slate and copper are among the most durable and environmentally responsible roofing options available. These natural materials are long-lasting and require minimal processing. When restoring historic structures, our teams carefully remove and inspect existing slate. Whenever possible, materials are reused, reducing waste while maintaining the original character and integrity of the building.

Construction plays a critical role in shaping a more sustainable future. At EDA, we take that responsibility seriously, integrating sustainable practices across every scope to deliver high-performing buildings that stand the test of time.
